Find the Word exercise
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Xa4LH3viv1k/TN7yzcIyzQI/AAAAAAAAALQ/6ugCG0J5qhU/s200/FindWordExercise.jpg
When I had joined a spoken English improvement course, there they made me do certain exercises. I will say that these spoken English exercises are very helpful in improving your communication skills. I am discussing one of those exercises which I feel is really beneficial for all.
Objective:-

To help the students recognize the right pronunciation of words, and help them gain speed in recognizing words.
Requirements:-

·                     It's somewhat a class exercise, so more the number of students, the better it is.
·                     A person who is good in English is supposed to be mentoring the session.
·                     A blackboard, chalk and duster.

Exercise Rules:-
1.            Divide the number of students in two groups. Let the groups be Group A and Group B.
2.            Write some words (around 20) on the blackboard.
3.            Call one person each from both groups. Give a chalk to both of them.
4.            Now the person who is mentoring the session is supposed to read loudly any word on the blackboard, and the students are supposed to cut that word with chalk at the earliest.
5.            The first person to cut the word, gets his group one positive point.
6.            Repeat with all the students, by calling them one by one from both groups.
7.            Make sure to maintain a lively environment in the class, as this exercise is great fun to do.
8.            After all the words are finished, just total the points and announce the winner group.

I am sure you will hear a loud cheer when you announce the winner group. That's all for today from Improve Spoken English.

Spoken English Exercise to Share Your Thoughts

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Xa4LH3viv1k/TN9CA2ft9cI/AAAAAAAAALU/BmYZIUSUVmA/s200/shareThoughtsExercise.gif
This is a very simple Spoken English Exercise to understand, but one of the most difficult when it comes to doing it. The exercises that I am discussing, are a set of activities which I had done in my English Improvement Course, and found them very useful.

Though there could be many exercises for English improvement, but I will stress that today's exercise is very important, and must be practiced and performed on as many occasions as possible.

Objective:-

To make the students speak in public places, so as to take out the fear of public speaking/Seminars within him/her. To build confidence in the speaker to speak in public.

Requirements:-

·                     This exercise can be practiced alone, but must be performed in a class.
·                     A person who is good in English is supposed to be mentoring the session.

Spoken English Exercise Rules:-
1.            Assign the class a time of 15 min, and ask them to speak on any topic they are comfortable with for at least 3 min.
2.            Let the students prepare for 15 min on their topic of choice, then call them one by one.
3.            Ask the person to speak for at least 2-3 min in front of the class.
4.            Let the person complete the task and do not interrupt in between. Make sure no one laughs in the class at mistakes, since this is very demotivating and embarrassing.
5.            After the task is done, inform the student about his mistakes and areas of improvement.
6.            Repeat with all the students.

This exercise sounds simple, but believe me it's the most dangerous of all. I have seen people shiver before getting called on the stage for their turn to speak. The basic aim is to boost the confidence level of the speakers for public speaking. The key is practice and consistency.

Spoken English Exercises

Speaking crisp and clear English is a significant part of learning the English language. It not only enhances the scope of communication but also augments the possibility of getting a good job. Today, most employers look for manpower with intermediate to expert English skills – both oral and written. But as English is considered to be the most widely used language for formal communications, more emphasis is placed upon spoken English skills than writing skills. This implies that it is imperative to develop and master speaking English, so that it goes a long way in shaping your career.
There are many aspects that need consideration when we talk about spoken English. Attaining fluency, developing vocabulary and learning the correct pronunciation/diction are some major points that need to be recognised in this regard. The best way to do this is by practicing a number of Spoken English Exercises that are fun and easy to do.
Some of the most common exercises and activities to improve spoken English are summarized below:
Reading – newspapers, books, magazines, dictionary, etc. aloud : Make it a habit to read either a newspaper, magazine or a book of your choice daily. The first part is to ‘read’ and the second part is to ‘read aloud’. While the first part will build the stock of words and knowledge of current affairs, the second part will help to learn and improve the pronunciation of different words. Don’t be shy; you do not, necessarily, have to read in front of anyone. You can try this in front of a mirror and check your diction yourself.
Playing word games that help stretch mouth and tongue muscles : Tongue twisters help to familiarize the tongue with similar and same sounding words and flexes the mouth muscles. Opening the mouth properly while speaking is very important. This adds accent and clarity to speech and prevents words from getting jumbled up inside the mouth. For example:
A twit who tweeted on twitter twice twittered a tweet to a twitterer.
OR
I thought a thought but the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I thought.

Group Discussion Exercise

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Xa4LH3viv1k/TN-xtStXNHI/AAAAAAAAALY/mbHyxBpPeCs/s200/spokenEnglishExercise1.jpg
Group Discussion is an integral part of any personalty development program. Also it is a very good exercise to improve Spoken English, and to build confidence in the speaker. It's tough if you have fear within you, but easy if you believe in yourself.

As I mentioned that the Group Discussion Exercise is practiced extensively in personalty development programs. The main reason is to stress on public speaking. So it's a way to get better in the art of communication.

Objective:-

To make the students discuss topics in English, and gain confidence in speaking. Also the exercise will be helpful in overcoming public speaking fear and develop a great personality for the individual.

Requirements:-

·                     This exercise requires at least 5 and at max 7 students. More that 7 students will spoil the session, as everyone tries to take control of the session, so the weaker ones will not be able to speak. A maximum number of 7 students will allow a somewhat fair chance to everyone to express their thoughts.
·                     A person who is good in English is supposed to be present nearby during the discussion.

Spoken English Exercise Rules:-
1.             Ask the  group of students to choose a topic from a list of 3 to 5 topics that you have already prepared.
2.             Once the topic is finalized, give the group 15 min to prepare, and then 20 min to discuss it among themselves.
3.             Make sure that the mentor remains silent during the discussion and just make observations for each student. He/She may interfere in case of any dispute during the discussion.
4.             Let the students complete the discussion on their selected topic, then ask each student one by one to summarize the discussion from his/her point of view.
5.             Finally inform the students about their performance, and their areas of improvement.

This is a heavy exercise and takes a lot of brain storming. You may practice it as per your comfort level, but remember that if you are good in this group discussion exercise, then you are good in communicating your thoughts, moreover the confidence levels in you are also high.

Listening : Listen to English news channels daily, watch English movies or shows and listen to English songs to acquire correct diction and understand various accents. You will be able to speak well only when you listen well and get the pronunciations right.
Correcting diction by recording your voice : You can record your own voice and listen to your pronunciation. The focus remains mainly on the grammar and the choice of words while speaking. Therefore, to correct your diction and ascertain your weak points in spoken English, you need to listen to your ownself speaking. This will also help in improving the amount of stress and type of tone required to speak different words.
Practicing speaking by talking more : Don’t lose an opportunity to speak in English. Make it a point to speak in English, whenever and wherever possible. Call friends up and interact with them in English. Try to use the new words that you learn from your daily readings. You can also talk to your parents and siblings in English, if possible. This will also help in making thinking in English your second nature; enhance your fluency and confidence to speak in English publicly.
Playing games on public speaking : Public speaking bolsters confidence. Try to play games with your friends that involve giving short speeches on various topics. Participate in class or group presentations to get rid of the fear involved in speaking English in front of a large audience. You can initially practice speaking in front of a mirror in your room. This will help you to notice your body language, voice tone and facial expressions, and in turn will prepare you to speak fluently in public.
Listening to English songs and read the lyrics aloud : Listening to English songs can be considered a type of accent training. It helps in understanding varied accents. You can use sub titles in the beginning. Once you memorize the lyrics, you can read them aloud on your own. This will help in bettering pronunciation.
Playing word games : Word games like Scrabble introduce new words and hence increase the vocabulary. Games on identifying Idioms and Proverbs can also be played to learn and familiarise oneself with them. This will help you in learning a variety of expressions and describing different situations, while you speak. The more knowledge of words you have, the better it is for you while speaking.

Importance of English Grammar

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Xa4LH3viv1k/StHBlDnv3hI/AAAAAAAAAEg/9Rp53KE1kUQ/s200/water-roots.gifWe know that the strength of a tree lies in its roots. Similarly the strength of any spoken language lies in itsgrammar. So if you seriously want to improve your spoken English, then you have to work on your grammar. Getting a good hold on grammar is required so that you can speak correct English. I have seen many speakers who speak incorrect grammar while speaking in English.

Having a perfect grammar is very hard, but the English grammar used for daily life can be easily attained by going back to your school books for grammar. Have a tight grip over your Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs,Adjectives, Adverbs and Prepositions.

The English Grammar school books that we thought of as very boring are the best resource for English Grammar available. The topics there are explained in a very descriptive and basic way, so as to help even a child gain confidence in English. Once you have chosen
ESL, then be sure that you have made the right choice.

There are many other ways also to build up your grammar like
speak in English to a teacher, watching English Movies to get the correct grammar usage, etc., you need not be a master for it, but the basic skill set is required. Grammar is something which goes within you and the output is quality English. It defines the basic rules for the English language and must be adhered to.

The way you express yourself during communications gives off hints as to your knowledge and education. The use of correct grammar at all the occasions will cause people to perceive you as a good English knowing person. On the contrary if incorrect usage of English grammar is done, then the impression formed on others is a very poor one and they might take you to be poorly educated. This explains why we need to go the depths of English and that is grammar itself.

All you need to get started is a good English grammar book and some time to spare everyday for reading and practicing it. The more you get used to working on your grammar, the more your English will automatically improve. This is similar to the fact that if a tree is dying, then the probable reason is the lack of water reaching the roots. So there is no advantage in watering the leaves, but the person has to water the roots. Similarly you need to provide food for the basic requirement of English.

Learning grammar can be boring initially, but once you gain momentum and start learning new rules, it will start to become fun. Remember that the more you learn the more confident you will become.
